Unix web hosting help What do I need to upload my website on your normal Unix hosting? You will need an FTP client to start with, click here for a free CuteFTP download. Many of todays web design software packages have FTP access included. You will also need the username and password to access your webspace which is provided by us to you when the web space is ordered and payment has been received. What is the name of the Unix host that I upload to? The name of the server on which your space is allocated is www.your-domain-name, therefore if your domain name is mynewdomain.com then you should set your ftp software to connect to host name www.mynewdomain.com. What is FTP? FTP is a program which allows you to connect to your Unix webspace via the internet from your PC. Once you have obtained an FTP client and entered the domain address and webspace username and password you can access our server to where your space is allocated. Once you have access to the space you can upload/download your files and make modifications to your site whenever you wish. The FTP will show you 2 directories, one will be your webspace and the other you can set to be the folder on your machine that your webpages are saved in. This way you can drag and drop your files from your PC to your webspace. What do I call my files...........? Your main page must be called index.html, then all other web pages can be called whatever you want, your html files must be uploaded into the root directory (there is a readme.txt file in your root directory which will give you further instructions) Where do I upload my images? You will need to create an images folder within your root directory to which you upload all of your images. I can't view my site after I have uploaded the files, all I can see if the Parent Directory instead of my Index page. You will need to check that all the files have been upoaded to the correct folders as detailed above. I have updated and overwritten files on my webspace, why is my site not seeing these changes? Sometimes when you modify your site your PC may cache the information it already has, for example if you modify your Index page and upload it your PC will already have details of this page. Therefore in order to refresh your machine you will need to delete the cached files in your browser. Once this is done your machine will then start to cache the new and modified information and your changes will then be visible. How can I use scripts with your hosting service? Scripts can be used with our Unix hosting service so long as they are approved by us. Some scripts will run straight off, but others may need permissions set on them to allow them to run. Your script may need to know specifics about the hosting environment to enable them to run such as paths to perl and sendmail.
